Boots have their main UK headquarters in Nottingham where about 10 sites are grouped around the town. These include a large manufacturing complex and data centre. There are about 4000 computer terminals connected to a LAN infrastructure based on Token Ring LAN and Fibre Optic WAN connections. Boots use primarily IBM equipment and software and are in the process of building up a large IBM Lan Server based network. This will provide users with office information facilities based on Microsoft Windows applications, including Lotus Notes, Ami-Pro, 123 and cc:Mail.
Boots have developed their LAN and Network Services infrastructure themselves. Having been recommended Daemon Consultants Ltd by IBM UK, they invited Daemon to quality assure the design and make recommendations as appropriate. This Daemon did, with the production of a full report on the architecture with an outline of potential problem areas. Analysis revealed several potential difficulties, and remedies were applied before full commitment to the design stage.
Daemon was also invited to tackle the problem of how best to run MS Windows over the network and was able to propose an approach which had previously been applied successfully at Unilever Research.
